How to Use an Excavator
Before we start, make sure you speak to the friendly staff at Kolun Hire when you pick up your excavator for a demonstration or further information on how to use the machine.
There are a number of steps in the process of using the excavator and the first is absolutely crucial. Let’s get into it!
- Dial Before You Dig!
Don’t make the mistake of getting over-excited. Before you dig, make sure you have checked for underground pipes, wires or other important infrastructure. The best way to do this is to visit the Dial Before You Dig website – https://www.1100.com.au/. Safety is key! - Prepare & Plan
Before you start digging, plan out your project. Where is the dirt that you excavate going to go? Do you have a plan to remove it? Remember, your excavator from Kolun Hire only digs the dirt out – it doesn’t move it. So make sure you’ve considered hiring a mini loader, so you’re not caught out. - Moving the Excavator
The typical excavator will have two travel sticks that control the backward and forward movement of each track. Push the left lever forward to start the left track and turn right – and vice versa to turn left. It can take a little bit of practice, so make sure you’re comfortable before continuing. Remember, if you find yourself going in circles, push both levers forward to go straight. - Moving the Boom & Bucket
There are usually two more levers within the cab, that will control the boom and the bucket – the important part of the digging process! Moving those two levers forward and back, and side-to-side, will control the boom and bucket movement. Ask your local Kolun Hire expert for more information.
Now that you’ve got the basics, get that job done! If you find yourself needing an extra tool or piece of equipment to finish everything just right, just give us a call. We’re sure to have the right piece in stock for you to hire.
